In a shocking turn of events, actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging from his Bandra apartment. The incident came to light around 12 noon today, when his house help broke open his door and saw that the 34- year old had committed suicide.

Condolence messages poured in from far and wide, with dignitaries and celebrities reacting to the news.

Pictures of his dead body started doing the rounds on social media, which was condemned by the likes of Director-choreographer Farah Khan and Anubhav Sinha. Director Anubhav Sinha lashed out at people who said they could not believe it, and threatened to report those who send him his last pictures.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s team issued a statement towards late evening, requesting his fans to “keep him in their thoughts and celebrate his life, and his work like they have done so far”.

 “We request media to help us maintain privacy at this moment of grief,” it added. The police confirmed that the actor committed suicide.

The actor starred in Ekta Kapoor’s directed daily soap Pavitra Rishta, and made his Bollywood debut with Kai Po Che! He was essayed the role of former Team India cricket captain MS Dhoni in MS Dhoni- The Untold Story and starred alongside Sara Ali Khan in her debut film Kedarnath, based on the Uttarakhand Cloud burst. Interestingly, he starred in Chichhore which was about mental health and suicide prevention. His last, unreleased film is Dil Bechara, the official remake of The Fault in our Stars by John Green.

Just last week, Sushant wrote in an Instagram story, “It’s such devastating news” after his former manager Disha Salian committed suicide.

The actor was going through depression for the past 6 months. He had last posted on Instagram about his mother, who had passed away in 2002- “Blurred past evaporating from teardrops, unending dreams carving an arc of smile And a fleeting life, negotiating between the two,” he wrote.

Sushant pursued Mechanical Engineering at Delhi Technological University (DTU). His family was not supportive of him quitting engineering to act and he mostly lived by his own, as per interviews he had given in the past. He dated actress Ankita Lokhande, his co-star in Pavitra Rishta. The couple called off their relationship after 7 years. He was rumoured to be seeing actress Rhea Chakraborty, who was with him alongside other friends the night before his suicide. He had sent all of them back, as per reports.
